Proper Foot Care – How to Keep Your Feet Healthy and Beautiful

Our feet are the foundation of our body. They carry us through everyday life, enable movement, and are often the first thing noticed when looking at someone.

Despite their importance, feet are often neglected. However, regular and proper foot care is essential to avoid issues such as calluses, cracks, fungal infections, or unpleasant odors. In this article, you will learn how to care for your feet optimally to keep them healthy, beautiful, and fit.

Why is foot care so important?

Our feet consist of 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. They are constantly under strain and therefore require special attention. Insufficient care can lead to calluses, corns, cracks, ingrown nails, fungal infections, and other problems. Additionally, well-cared-for skin on the feet looks appealing and contributes to overall well-being.

Step 1: Daily cleaning

The first step to healthy feet is daily cleaning. Wash your feet morning and evening with warm water and a mild, pH-neutral soap. Make sure to clean thoroughly between the toes, as dirt, sweat, and bacteria can accumulate there. After washing, dry your feet carefully to remove moisture that can promote fungal infections.

Step 2: Care for foot skin and remove calluses

Calluses are a natural protective reaction of the skin to pressure and friction. However, if they become too thick, they can be uncomfortable and even cause pain. To prevent or reduce calluses, regularly use a foot scrub or pumice stone. After showering or bathing, the pores are open, which makes removal easier. Gently rub the calluses with a pumice stone or a special scrub without injuring the skin. For severe calluses, you can also use special callus removers containing salicylic acid. It is important not to irritate the skin too much to avoid cracks or inflammation.

Step 3: Proper nail care

Healthy nails are an important part of well-groomed feet. Cut your toenails regularly, preferably straight across, to prevent ingrown nails. Then gently file the nails to remove sharp edges. Avoid cutting the nails too short, as this can irritate the nail beds. If you have problems such as ingrown nails, you should see a podiatrist.

Step 4: Moisturizing care

Dry, cracked skin is not only unattractive but can also be painful. After cleaning and removing calluses, apply a moisturizing  foot cream . Choose a cream rich in urea, glycerin, or shea butter to keep the skin supple. Regular care is especially essential during cold months or for dry skin. Gently massage the cream into the skin to promote circulation.

Step 5: Foot baths for relaxation and care

A foot bath offers numerous benefits. It relaxes the muscles, promotes circulation, opens the pores, and facilitates the removal of calluses and dirt. It also has a calming effect on the mind and body – perfect after a long day or during stress. Regular foot baths can also support certain conditions such as cold feet, swollen legs, or mild skin irritations.
